TIVERTON, U.K. (June 30, 2008) — Phihong, the global leader in low-cost power supplies, has developed a 30W universal 2-wire input adapter for medical equipment. Designated the PSAM30R series, the adapter works with interchangeable AC power plugs and is approved to UL and IEC 60601-1 medical safety standards as well as AS/NZS 4417 for Australia and New Zealand. The adapter, which also complies with California’s Appliance Efficiency Regulation and the federal government’s Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, is ideal for applications such as patient hoists, dental curing equipment, and portable dental and medical equipment “Phihong, the global leader in power solutions, now offers an extended line of unregulated switching adapters that comply with the U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act that goes into effect in July. Designated the PLA Series, the adapters are available in 1W, 2W, 3W, and 5W single output voltage models and meet Level IV efficiency. The PLA adapters can be used in place of non-compliant unregulated linear adapters, and are ideal for applications such as wireless communications, cordless headsets, Blue Tooth device chargers and cell phones. “Phihong is the only manufacturer offering a complete range of adapters that comply with the Energy Independence and Security Act, and the only one making linear replacement adapters available as standard solutions to the general market,” said Keith Hopwood, vice president of marketing for Phihong USA. “While the new regulations are forcing manufacturers to design alternatives to the linear adapters they are currently using, Phihong is doing it in support of our longstanding company-wide green initiative.” Phihong is also able to offer its PLA Series linear replacement adapters at a lower cost than traditional switching adapters because they have eliminated the control and feedback circuits and components. Also, the adapter simply uses one primary control circuit. “The products have the benefits of a wide-range input switcher but the output regulation is more like a linear product,” Hopwood said. The PLA Series devices are available as fixed wall plugs (1W, 2W, 3W, 5W). The PLA Series adapters feature high efficiency, double insulation have short circuit protection with auto recovery, are safety approved by UL as limited power sources. The devices have a no-load power consumption of less than 0.3W, zero minimum load, and meet the minimum efficiency required by Energy Star and the Energy Independence and Security Act. Unlike linear adapters, these products have a wide input voltage range of 90VAC to 264VAC. A detailed specification is available on the website at http://www.phihong.com.
